From April 8 to 10, fifth- and sixth-year students worked with the renowned and internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Jiří Pokorný, who has collaborated with Laterna Magika, the National Dance Theater (NDT), and a number of leading choreographers and dance companies.

Education

Czech choreographer Jiří Pokorný lives and works in The Hague, the Netherlands. After graduating from the Prague Dance Conservatory in 2000, he was hired as a dancer with Laterna magika. Three years later, he joined the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (NDT2) company in The Hague and subsequently NDT1. After seven years with NDT, he moved to Vancouver, where he performed with the Kidd Pivot company under the direction of Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite. He has collaborated with a number of other renowned artists, including Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, Paul Lightfoot, and Sol León. Jiří has performed on the stages of many major theaters around the world, including the Paris Opera, Sadler’s Wells in London, Teatro Real in Madrid, Teatro Liceu in Barcelona, and the Joyce Theater in New York.

Since 2013, he has worked as a freelance choreographer and collaborates with companies in Europe and North America. He has created works for NDT, Italy’s Aterballetto, the Basel Ballet, the National Theater in Mannheim, the Budapest Dance Theater, the Prague Chamber Ballet, the North West Dance Project in Portland, Oregon, the Korzo Theater in The Hague, and others. As a dance teacher, he instructs at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Juilliard School in New York, as well as in dance courses at Arts Umbrella in Vancouver, the NDT Summer Intensive, and Architanz in Tokyo.

Jiří leads his own educational program for young choreographers, the Pioneer Project, at the Korzo Theater in The Hague.
